CHICAGO, Jan 25, 2023 - AHIMA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), announced today that it will open its 2023 scholarship application in February with $100,000 available in scholarships for currently enrolled outstanding health information students pursuing associate's, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees in health information management (HIM) or health informatics (HI). A new dissertation grant program will open in March 2023 for students pursuing a doctoral degree in an area related to health information.

“We are thrilled to continue our scholarship program and provide determined and motivated health information students with the support and advancement they deserve,” said Megan McVane, AHIMA Foundation Program Director. “In 2022, we awarded $81,000 in scholarships to 15 students for the 2022–2023 academic year.”
Interested students are encouraged to review frequently asked questions on AHIMA Foundation’s website, as well as a list of tips for a successful scholarship application – which include the 2023 required essay questions:
- We know education doesn’t occur solely in the classroom. Tell us about your employment, volunteer, and/or extracurricular activities. How have these activities prepared you or piqued your interest in the health information field?
- Tell us about your experience navigating digital technology to manage your own health (i.e., using a hospital website, patient portal, health app, etc.) What made it easy? What made it difficult? What changes would you recommend to the developers?
- What specific area of health information interests you most and why? For example, what problem do you want to help solve? What area are you most passionate about?
- Given AI and the increased use of technology to provide and manage care, how do you see the health information profession and AHIMA evolving over the next 20 years? What do you think your job, as a health information professional, might look like in 20 years?
